The Scottish Gin Society – the home of Scottish Gin

The UK gin industry has seen an unprecedented boom in recent years, with sales and exports of the spirit soaring. In Scotland, the number of new gin brands and distilleries is constantly growing, at a rate that is quite remarkable.

The team at The Scottish Gin Society are tirelessly keeping their ears to the ground to keep track of all the new distilleries, brands, expressions and gin events from all over Scotland, keeping the gin-loving public up to date with everything that is going on.

Established in 2016 by Glasgow businessman, Stephen White, The Scottish Gin Society is a not-for-profit organisation. Founded by Stephen and driven by his love of Scottish Gin, The Society exists to promote and celebrate the wonderful world of Scottish Gin. It has grown in to an online community of more than 120,000 people – testimony to the huge popularity of Scottish Gin today.

Stephen says “When I founded the Scottish Gin Society, I had little idea that we were just at the beginning of a huge renaissance for gin, but I knew that Scotland had some amazing gin brands already and I wanted to promote the Scottish Gin category to be recognised for quality and innovation, like the Scottish Whisky industry.”

“I’m incredibly proud of how the society has grown, with such a great number of highly engaged members, we’re in an ideal position to help Scottish Gin brands, large and small, reach new audiences and grow.”

Today, the society’s website is home to the most comprehensive guide to Scottish Gin available, attracting over 20,000 visits per month. They have a visual A-Z of Scottish Gins, that makes it easy for consumers to browse and find out more about their favourite, and importantly – where and how it is made. New brands and expressions are added regularly, making it the most up to date resource for consumers.

Keeping the A-Z up to date is no easy job and the society added 40 new Scottish Gin brands in 2018 alone!

The team created the first interactive distillery map that shows all the gin stills in Scotland, and it is possible to search by distilleries that are open to the public. Gin tourism and Gin Schools are becoming increasingly popular – it’s a great way to find out more about your favourite gin, or even make your own new favourite.

There is a beautifully illustrated map that is free to download and would look great hanging on any wall.

Every few weeks, the society chooses a new Featured Gin, where they delve into the unique story behind each gin and share this with their followers. It’s great news for the gins, who enjoy exposure to thousands of potential new customers for free. The Scottish Gin Society doesn’t charge brands or members for their services, it’s all for the love of Scottish Gin.

Aly Higgins is Brand Ambassador for The Scottish Gin Society – one of the best jobs in the world possibly? Aly spends her time travelling around Scotland, finding out more about the people behind the gins and forging relationships with distillers, brands and industry figures.

Aly says “The passion and creativity here is Scotland is quite incredible, and I feel really privileged to have met so many talented distillers and ambitious brands. It is exciting to be a small part of this category, and I am learning all the time. What makes The Scottish Gin Society and my job so special, is that we are at the heart of a community that supports all of Scottish Gin”

A recent consumer survey conducted by The Scottish Gin Society received over 6,400 votes from people choosing their favourite Scottish Gin. It saw Isle of Harris Gin reach the top spot for the second year in a row, but it also saw a diverse range of brands in the top 10.

Aly goes on to say: “we had almost double the number of votes from 2018, which shows the loyalty consumers have for their favorite Scottish Gins”

6 genius variations using gin

Big Big Gin Festival

To state the obvious: we love to drink gin. But what is even more wonderful about this amazing drink: it has inspired a lot of people to think past the drink. There are lots of products out there that can gin up your live even more. Here are a couple of our favourites:

  1. Gin pong

This one is for the people who are not a fan of beer, or for the people who just want to do something different with the classic game. Fill the (very cute) glasses with gin and your preferred mixer, divide the teams and let the games be-gin! (oh yeah, I made the classic pun there). Take a look

  1. Gin & tonic cupcakes

I praise the person who ever invented the combo of two of the best things in life: G&T’s and cupcakes! Make them yourself or find a bakery close by who can make them. A guaranteed success (well, accept for baby showers maybe). Click here for cupcakes!

  1. Gin tonic tea

Do you need a bit of a gin kick in your morning tea? Try out some gin and tonic tea without any of the consequences. The tea is completely alcohol free, so you don’t have to worry about getting drunk during office hours. The gin flavour comes from the juniper berries added to the tea. Get some G&T tea

  1. Gin tonic quotes

Do you want to show your friends and family how much you love gin? And do you have an empty wall at home that is waiting for some decoration? Why not brighten things up with a cute gin themed framed print? Gin up your life

  1. Gin water bottle

This one might by my personal favourite from this entire list. This water bottle is for people who like to exercise, but maybe even more for people who don’t. A great water bottle that puts a smile on your face every time you use it. See more

  1. Gin lamp

A lot of gin distilleries give a lot of attention to the design of the bottle. And it would be such a waist just to throw it all out. So why not brighten up your place with a beautiful gin bottle lamp? It will give your house some extra character and it is just really pretty to have. Get more info

The most common mistakes while making gin

Big Big Gin Festival

Maybe you are already an experience gin drinker, or maybe you just started and want to know the ins & outs on gin serving for your next party. Either way, it’s good to give this article a short read. In the Hight of the gin craziness, there is a lot happening that confuses people when it comes to drinking gin.

So, you want to serve and drink a proper gin. What to do?

  1. Get the right glass

Gin and red wine are much the same.  They both need space in the glass so you can smell the aroma to enhance the flavour. The best glass for gin: the big balloon glasses.

But if you don’t have any space in your cupboard, or no budget to buy an extra pair of glasses, just use red wine glasses or big tumblers. The most important part is that you can smell the aroma and have enough space for a good amount of ice to keep your drink cool.

Talking about ice…

  1. Don’t believe the ice myth

It’s very important that your gin cocktail stays cold. But one of the most misunderstood myths is that if you put too much ice in the glass, you’ll dilute the drink. A lot of people just put 1 or 2 ice cubes in the drink. Our advice: don’t do that! The more ice you put in the glass, the colder the drink stays so no dilution! (or at least, less). If you only put a couple of ice cubes in there, your drink is definitely getting diluted and that would be too bad.

  1. Be creative: there are more possibilities then lemons and limes

The basic fruit to put in a Gin mixer is a lemon or a lime. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But you can make it a lot more interesting. Making raspberry gins? Put a couple of crushed mint leaves in there. Making a Gin with ginger beer? Try to mix it up with blood orange juice and finish the beautifully coloured cocktail with a slice of blood orange. Of course, you don’t have to immediately ditch the lemons and limes, just know that there are loads of other options you can use to spice up your cocktail.

  1. Know what you want

The gin aficionado will know about this: there are a lot, A LOT of options to choose from if you want to drink gin. You can go for a mixer like a Gin & Tonic or for a cocktail like a martini. But it doesn’t stop there. When you order gin at a bar, the bartender will ask you “What type of gin?” And then the real decision-making starts. Gordon’s , Bombay Sapphire, Edinburgh Gin, Darnley’s, Tanquary et cetera, et cetera..

It is amazing to have this many options, but it can be a pain in the ass for you as a customer/party organiser and for the bartender. So, it’s good to know what you want and what you like.

  1. Just enjoy

Even though drinking a good gin comes with some tips and rules, just enjoy this delicious drink! The versatility of Gin and his many options can be a bit daunting, but it’s also a good excuse to experiment and to find out what you like.

Talking about having fun… have you seen that the Big Big Gin Festival is coming upon us? Be quick and buy your tickets now! There is no better way to experiment and find out what your favourite gin cocktail is then during this event where a lot of different distilleries will tell you everything about gin.

A small refresher when it comes to drinking gin

Big Big Gin Festival Edinburgh

It is funny how one different type of alcohol, can cause such great discussion at the event team for the Big Big Gin Festival. Gin. Do you drink it with the classic tonic? The much sweeter lemonade? Or with the spicier ginger beer? Cranberry juice maybe?

And what is your favourite brand? Edinburgh Gin, Gordon’s, Tanquaray, et cetera, et cetera…

We all try to be an expert in the matter. Because, of course, everyone is. But we found out that our knowledge of gin doesn’t go any further than that. We all have a lack of general knowledge in the case. We know we like to drink it, but… that’s it. So, we thought it was time to polish up our knowledge and sound like a real gin pro while drinking it. Here are some interesting facts that will make you sound like a pro next time your drinking gin:

  1. Gin is the original Dutch courage

Before the 17th century, no Brit had ever heard about the spirit. It was the Dutch doctor Franciscus de le Boë Sylvius who used Gin (or Jenever as the Dutch call it) as a medicine against stomach complaints and gal stones. A medicine that a lot of men at sea could use. And when the British and the Dutch sailors met, the Brits discovered this amazing drink that would ease the pain. And yeah, it would make you incredible drunk. The term “Dutch courage” was invented at this time. Just drink some gin and you’ll have enough courage to take the pretty lady home with you.

  1. Feeling sick? Just drink some gin!

Like we said before, gin started out as a medicine. But not just in The Netherlands. The Gin & Tonic is created in India because of health reasons.  They thought that tonic water would help against malaria. Gin was added to soothe the bitterness of the tonic.

But not just the G&T was helpful against diseases. In order to prevent scurvy, Lime juice was added to the gin of sailors. And then, the Gimlet was officially born!

  1. Don’t be tough, gin is not made to drink neat

The reason why gin is so popular, is because it’s easy to make and good to mix. During prohibition years people would make gin in their bathtubs. And no, that wasn’t a good thing. Because there where no regulations to consider, the gins where often not suited to drink. Causing illness and even death.

When you where desperate for a strong drink, gin would be mixed to sooth the incredible fire of the alcohol. The one good thing that came out of this is the creativity of the many, many, many different cocktails we have now.

  1. One of the reasons it’s so popular now is because of an epic legal win

For a long time, it was near impossible for gin companies to produce small quantities because of restrictions from the HMRC. But thankfully it all changed in 2009 when a gin distillery called Sipsmith won a historic two-year battle with the HMRC. This resulted in distilleries having the legal right to produce and sell gin in small amounts.

This, and the always present popularity of gin in pop culture makes gin so popular. On top of that, gin is incredibly versatile and makes it a drink for everyone. You can find a gin mixture on almost every (bar) menu in the country.

Time to drink some gin!

So, now you can say you know more about gin then just what your favourite mixer is. But of course, the most important thing to know about gin is that it’s a delicious beverage, and you decide yourself how, when or where to drink it.
